The News fills the gap between Slab and Serif because it is a revised interpolation. Not as soft and lovely as the Serif, but less linear than the Slab. Because of its — for an antiqua — fairly stable serifs and a lower contrast, it’s suitable for use in harsh environments — for example the newspaper printing. Therefore the name.
